INTO THE HEART OF MEXICO: EXPATRIATES FIND THEMSELVES OFF THE BEATEN PATHFor those who are thinking to work or retire in Mexico, the expatriate colonies in San Miguel de Allende and Lake Chapala are well known. For many Americans and Canadians coming south of the border to simply live or start a business abroad, the ability to tread a well-worn path is reassuring. Other folks who know the ropes are willing to help you get settled. But what if you’re looking for an experience of Mexico undiluted by the presence of so many foreigners? This book reveals the stories of people who have moved to Mexico to settle in places that have only small or hardly any support communities; in one case a place that is nearly a ghost town. Is this a different kind of expat? Does it require more independence of mind or only better Spanish? Find out here in their own words as you follow these conversations around the less well-traveled roads of Mexico off the beaten path.

Book Into the Heart of Mexico: Expatriates Find Themselves Off the Beaten path Review :

Although the author is a skilled writer, and most of the people he interviewed were interesting (some more, some considerably less), I was kind of disappointed in this book. The description implies he was interviewing a more adventurous type of expat, because they chose areas without large expat communities, for support, or in some cases having little interaction with other expats. Yet each person interviewed either continues to divide their time between Mexico and the US, and/or still have strong "lifelines" in the US in the form of successful businesses which continue to maintain them economically, or successful careers in the US which continue to maintain them. To me, that's not adventurous. As an expat, myself, who came to Mexico 30 years ago (at age 46) with a suitcase and a couple hundred dollars, and only a smattering of Spanish, I chose an area so remote that there were no English speakers within 200 miles, much less an expat community. I wanted to experience the country, the culture, and the people in ways that tourists never do. To me, that was adventurous. I'm afraid I don't consider people who still have one foot firmly (and economically) in the US, while living part-time in Mexico, true expats. Only one of the interviewees had truly adapted to full-time life in Mexico, because he married an indigenous Mexican woman and was absorbed into her family and culture. All other interviewees were/are still very Americanized.
Usually I read mysteries, but this book caught my eye and I liked it very much. There are a few Mexican families in our neighborhood and I was curious about the Mexican inland. It seems to be a gorgeous country, I think I would like the mountains a lot better than the beaches. Especially the description of the smaller towns got my attention. I looked up the places mentioned in the book and found a lot of beautiful photos. There are lots of typos in the Ebook, and in 2 places the font changes from a fairly large, to a lot smaller one. I don't know if this is so in the printed version. I still gave the book 5 stars, because I think we need books like this more than travel guides. This gives a real vision of the place, not a list of to-see places. If you intend to move somewhere, this is what you need. (I moved to the USA from Europe 16 years ago)
