You might think from the title this book is chock full of recipes from some of they city's great, late restaurants. You'd be wrong. There is a formula for Younker's rarebit sauce which has circulated widely for years. A few salad dressing offerings, a soup course from Babe's and, again not hard to find with scant searching, a steak de burgo.To make things worse it doesn't seem well researched. My friend, Gary Fatino, who operated Fatino's for years after buying Rocky's White Shutter Inn, read it and said the Johnny and Kay's salad dressing isn't accurate ("I know-I made enough of it") along with several others in which he had a hand.The omissions are surprising: Noah's Ark, La Pizza House, Tasty Tacos, Jesse's Embers, Millie's Drive-In and Boswell's to name a few.I think the book was a good idea but fell short of its goal. Perhaps it's a foundation on which to build a sturdier structure. What a delicious book of local history and food. I was surprised that the longest lived restaurant in Des Moines was Chinese, from the early 1900s. Growing up on a farm less than an hour from the capitol city, it was quite an outing to shop in downtown and enjoy the ambiance of a nice restaurant. Some have surprising histories, along with their owners, including one who would boss his customers about their eating habits.There are stories about Younkers Tea Room to Tasty Tacos, Bishop's Cafeteria to Porky's Drive-in. And so many about restaurants run by Italian immigrants.This is the first book I've read with quotations from a Facebook page, but the "Lost Des Moines" page is a place to find a wealth of wonderful stories.Even the Bibliography is delightful, with books by Bill Bryson and Chuck Offenburger.
